      Our Story

In the fall of 1993, we opened The Green Store in a 100 year-old brick building on Main Street in Belfast, Maine. With a nod to the village general stores of the past and a mission to promote personal and planetary well-being, we set out to provide simple, practical products to help people live an environmentally sustainable lifestyle.

More than 21 years since our founding, customers from Maine and beyond are beating a path to our door to shop in person or online. Many of them have been with us for years because they rely on the Green Store for earth-friendly products from our down to earth staff. Our motto here is "we won't sell it if we don't use it ourselves". Thus, if you have any questions about any product we carry, we're here to lend a hand.

Give us a call at (207) 338-4045 Monday thru Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST or Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST or send us an e-mail at

"I love my Lifefactory glass water bottle! I take it everywhere I need to go. It's great to be able to use an environmentally-friendly water bottle without it changing the taste of the water..."

Celebrate with us and shop for a good cause

On the day after Thanksgiving, The Green Store will be turning “Black Friday” GREEN for our 19th birthday! Each year, as part of our birthday celebration and in the spirit of giving back to our community, we do a fun event through out the weekend to raise money for three local organizations. This year, The Green Store has chosen to support: The Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM), Hope Elephants, and the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives (NACPM).

It is easy to shop and earn “Green Bucks” to support three amazing organizations. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 23 to 25, customers will be issued “Green Bucks” in the amount of 19% (for our 19th birthday) of their purchase when they checkout. They can then donate their “Bucks” to the non-profit(s) of their choice: NRCM, Hope Elephants, or NACPM. At the end of the birthday weekend, we will tally up the “Green Bucks”, and make a corresponding donation to each of this year’s organizations! In the past, the Green Store has given away up to $1000 for our birthday, thanks to our customers who come in to shop for good causes and make it possible. The Green Store owner, Ellie Daniels, along with representatives from each of the organizations, will be visiting in the store on Friday, November 23. Customers are welcome to celebrate, shop and enjoy refreshments through out the weekend. 19% of online sales ( for the weekend will also be distributed to the organizations.

The Natural Resources Council of Maine is a nonprofit membership organization working statewide for clean air, healthy waters, safeguards for our people and wildlife, forest protections, and clean, renewable energy solutions. We were founded in 1959 by a group of concerned citizens who wanted to protect the Allagash. Their efforts succeeded. Today, NRCM harnesses the power of science, the law, and the voices of more than 12,000 supporters across Maine and beyond. We have led the way on Maine’s most well-known and important environmental victories, including the bottle bill and billboard laws, first-in-nation electronic waste recycling law and Kids-safe Products Act, restoration of Maine’s great rivers including the Kennebec and Penobscot, and much more. Hope Elephants is a not-for-profit organization which operates a unique care and rehabilitation facility for retired circus elephants located in Hope, Maine. At this facility a pair of aging elephants (Rosie and Opal) receive state-of-the-art care, including physical therapy, in a purpose-built habitat dedicated to meet their needs. After years of work in the circus, Hope Elephants is providing these elephants with a permanent home specifically designed to improve their quality of life and ease the symptoms of their deteriorated joints and limbs. Hope Elephants is also an educational facility where school children and adult visitors experience elephants in a curated and safe environment which presents elephants not as a curiosity, but as fellow sentient beings deserving of our respect, care and support. The goal of Hope Elephants’ educational programs is to inspire visitors to act upon their experience and find their own path to participation in wildlife conservation.  For more information on Hope Elephants visit

The National Association of Certified Professional Midwives (NACPM) is a professional association committed to significantly increasing women’s access to quality maternity care by supporting the work and practice of Certified Professional Midwives.

NACPM’s purpose is to contribute to a new era in maternity care by inspiring and engaging CPMs to be an organized force for change. NACPM:

    • Advocates for CPMs to the public, to state and federal legislators and to health care policy makers
    • Addresses barriers to practice for CPMs including reimbursement and advocacy for a path to licensure for CPMs in all 50 states
    • Secures a “seat at the table” for CPMs in the larger maternity care world by representing CPMs in national coalitions and to other national organizations
    • Participates on behalf of CPMs in key national collaborations to improve maternity care
    • Provides clinical practice resources and support to CPMs

NACPM is the sponsoring organization for the MAMA Campaign, a federal initiative to increase access to midwifery care by securing federal recognition for CPMs. The MAMA Campaign has put forth HR 1054, a Bill to add the CPM credential to the Medicaid Provider List. The Bill is sponsored by Chellie Pingree of Maine, and has garnered 23 co-sponsors.

Ellie Daniels, owner of the Green Store, is also a midwife with Morningstar Midwifery. She serves on the Steering Committee for the MAMA Campaign, and is the newly elected Vice President of NACPM.
