What is it?
Potassium alum, while it sounds similar to "aluminum," is a colorless salt crystalline structure derived from bauxite ore. Bauxite ore forms during the rapid weathering of granite rocks in warm, humid climates, and is purified and converted directly into alum. Large potassium alum molecules have a negative ionic charge, making them unable to pass through the cell walls of your skin – meaning they are not absorbed into the body.
Instead, potassium alum acts only on the surface of the skin, lowering its pH just enough to target and prevent the growth of odor-causing bacteria.
